Washington DC, December 12, 2019—The Government of Zambia approved the introduction of Africa GreenCo as a creditworthy intermediary renewable energy purchaser to improve the country’s access needs and to mitigate against the negative impacts of climate change. This major milestone will accelerate Africa GreenCo’s operationalisation, enabling it to attract sustainable investors in the power sector and bring greater efficiencies in both the demand and supply side of the country’s energy industry.

A P4G (Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals 2030) 2019 Scale-Up partnership, Africa GreenCo is a public-private partnership that will support the expansion of renewable energy supply through new investments and reduced prices. In 2019, P4G awarded Africa GreenCo $1 million in scale-up funding and the partnership has also secured a $45 million commitment from Agence Française de Développement backed by the European Commission’s European Fund for Sustainable Development.

“We’re grateful to the Government of Zambia for its support of Africa GreenCo and for taking this critical step. This is a momentous accomplishment that could transform the power sector in Zambia and other countries in Southern Africa,” said Robyn McGuckin, Head of Partnerships, P4G. “The ripple effects of a stable energy sector in Zambia will be felt across all areas in the country from education to improved access to health care, and will stimulate sustainable economic development.”

Africa GreenCo will not own or operate any grid infrastructure or replace existing utilities. Instead, it will complement them and optimize the existing power sector in Zambia by mitigating credit risks on a portfolio basis and encouraging private sector investment that would enable quicker growth.

Minister of National Development Planning Zambia

"Today, we need true paradigm shifts toward low-emission and climate-resilient sustainable development in order to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on sustainable development and growth of Zambia and the Southern African region.  We are delighted to be working with the P4G, Africa GreenCo, the Green Climate Fund and a number of Zambia’s key cooperating partners to ensure that new business models, innovation and systemic change is delivered on the ground and felt by those most in need. Through this model we can attract the significant amount of funding required to harness Zambia’s abundant renewable energy resources,” said Honourable Alexander Chiteme, MP, Minister of National Development Planning, Zambia.

“Through its role as a creditworthy intermediary, GreenCo will be well placed to provide an efficient link between small-to-medium sized renewable energy projects and the wider market, aggregating and diversifying supply and demand side risks, and helping to improve market structure and liquidity – a prerequisite for attracting significant funding to diversify the existing power system at a lower generation tariff”, said Ana Hajduka Founder and CEO of Africa GreenCo and GreenCo Power Services Limited – the operating company in Zambia.

Africa GreenCo hopes to begin operations in Zambia next year and expects to expand to eSwatini, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and other countries in Southern Africa. The long-term goal of the partnership is to replicate the model across Africa. Within 12 years, it aims to mobilize $5.6 billion in renewable energy investments.

COLOMBIA AND MEXICO SET TO BOOST GREEN BUILDINGS WITH P4G AWARD FOR CITIES ACTION PROJECT SUPPORTED BY THE BUILDING EFFICIENCY ACCELERATOR

COPENHAGEN (October 20, 2018) — Buildings in Colombia and Mexico may get a green makeover thanks to expanded support for energy efficiency programs after winning a $600,000 award that transitions buildings at scale to save energy and prepare cities for a net zero future announced today at the Copenhagen P4G Summit.

This partnership between P4G and the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) focuses on equipping Green Building Councils (GBCs) to deliver transformational change in building efficiency city policies and action. One of the ways that GBCs are currently doing this is within the Building Efficiency Accelerator (BEA) partnership.

“As nearly a third of the world’s energy goes to heat, light and cool buildings, reducing energy use can save money while also supporting global carbon reductions,” said Ian de Cruz, global director of Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G), the initiative that is providing the additional funding and support to the Cities Climate Action Project supported by the Building Efficiency Accelerator partnership.

The Cities Climate Action Project supported by the Building Energy Efficiency Accelerator is one of six partnerships selected by P4G to receive scale-up funding. Overall, P4G selected 24 partnerships to fund and support in 2018 following a global competition that attracted 450 submissions from 80 countries.

“As one of the key elements of our regional Cities Climate Action Project, the Building Efficiency Accelerator is a proven framework through which the public, private and NGO sectors can partner to deliver energy efficiency in buildings at scale,” said Terri Wills, CEO of the World Green Building Council. “This is why it is one of the partnerships through which our GBCs can support their cities. We look forward to expanding our work with cities in Colombia and Mexico to support their energy efficiency policies and programs at the city level while gearing up others in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Peru and Panama by sharing valuable expertise gained from work in other cities.”

The Colombia GBC has been leveraging the BEA in Bogotá for two years and recently announced that the city has adopted a new policy for more energy-efficient construction that is expected to reduce energy and water use in new buildings by 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively, when fully implemented. The city also will integrate the energy and water saving goals of Colombia’s national building efficiency code into its master plan.

Juan Camilo González, Advisor to the Mayor of Bogotá, Enrique Peñalosa said: “Bogota is making great strides to transform the building and construction of our city to be greener and more sustainable.  Our city strategy and policies will help mitigate the impact that our citizens and buildings have on the environment: to help us to guarantee sustainable environmental, social and economic development."

“Fragmentation of the building and construction sectors can make scaling energy efficiency best practices and innovation more complex than in other industries,” said Clay Nesler, Vice President, Global Sustainability and Industry Initiatives at Johnson Controls. “Partnerships and collaboration are therefore crucial to help buildings achieve their full potential for reducing carbon emissions, improving economic outcomes in cities, and improving health and wellbeing.”

Better building efficiency policies can result in 25-50 percent reductions in energy demand from both new and existing buildings, saving money and reducing pollution. Energy efficiency measures in the building sector could deliver 5.8 billion tons of CO2 emissions savings by 2050, according to WorldGBC. Most of the technologies needed to do so are already commercially available and many deliver positive financial returns within relatively short payback periods.

Contact: Sangeetha Sarma, Head of Communications, sangeetha.sarma@p4gpartnerships.org

WASHINGTON, DC – May 19, 2020 – Today, the Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) initiative awarded Scale-Up funding to nine public-private partnerships to accelerate their transformative business models aimed at helping countries reach their Sustainable Development Goals and build more resilient economies. The 2020 P4G Scale-Up Partnerships will each receive up to $1,000,000 in funding.

“P4G’s mission of investing in inclusive and viable new finance and business models comes to life with our cohort of Scale-Up Partnerships. We’re pleased to welcome this group of innovators to our family. As countries plan their COVID-19 recoveries, these transformative models provide the immediate responses needed to achieve a low carbon recovery and will help move the needle in this decade of action and delivery. As our P4G impact model is enhanced, we will apply our venture capital approach and leverage our strong eco-system of engaged policymakers and organizational partners to accelerate these partnerships,” says Ian de Cruz, P4G Global Director.

The 2020 Scale-Up Partnerships are models of change that are adapting their solutions and leveraging P4G’s support to meet global COVID-19 economic recovery needs. The IIX Women’s Livelihood Bond Series will mobilize up to $30 million to help more than half a million women access and build capital during a time when they will face enhanced credit challenges. The Circular Fashion Agenda will create models to address the implications of textile manufacturing waste and the cancellation of $2.8 billion worth of orders because of COVID-19 that directly impacts Bangladesh’s garment sector, and FLAWLESS that will test viable financial models of reducing food loss and waste to respond to the increased revenue generating needs of businesses in the food and hospitality sector.

The cohort also includes P4G’s first Scale-Up Partnership pursuing SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation for all. The Finance for WASH Access partnership will work closely with commercial banks and microfinance institutions to unleash private investment capital for water and sanitation solutions in Ethiopia. Other partnerships like ZEBRA and the Getting to Zero Coalition are working to achieve zero emission transit across buses and international shipping respectively.

"P4G has been valuable in bringing us closer to achieve Colombia's climate ambitions through its ability to bring in key players like the private sector. Reducing emissions in transportation is a top priority for us in line with our National Development Plan and our National Strategy for Electric and Sustainable Mobility, and we look forward to an ongoing collaboration with P4G through the ZEBRA partnership. As Colombia and economies around the world recover from COVID-19, we see great value in the on-the-ground approach P4G brings to achieve scalable and sustainable systems change,” said Luis Alberto Rodriguez Ospino, Minister for Planning.

“Cooperation not competition is the key to bringing about the necessary systemic changes and that's true now more than ever as countries and corporations around the world design their COVID-19 responses and recoveries. Sustainability, particularly issues such as climate change and achieving net zero emissions through industry transition, such as international shipping, must remain at the forefront.  We especially value P4G’s ability to implement practical projects at a country level, and look forward to our collaboration with P4G on the Getting to Zero Coalition,” says Børge Brende, World Economic Forum President and P4G Board member.

These nine partnerships join P4G’s growing portfolio of more than 50 partnership-driven business models working across the initiative’s priority sectors: food and agriculture, water, energy, cities, and circular economy. Learn more about the 2020 P4G Scale-Up Partnerships below:

  • Circular Fashion Agenda works with manufacturers, recyclers and major fashion brands to improve the resilience of the garment industry and increase political and consumer pressure to make it more sustainable. The partnership will work in Bangladesh to capture and direct fashion waste back into the production of new fashion products to increase the use of recycled materials while also growing revenues for its partners.
  • Energise Africa is a crowdfunding platform that allows everyday investors to support small and medium enterprise African solar companies. The partnership will support more than 40 renewable energy companies in Africa by mobilizing more than $1.7 billion in people-powered finance over the next five years, enabling energy access for over 50 million people.

OXFORD—17 July 2019— More than 600 million people living in Africa lack access to electricity – a statistic that has become somewhat of a refrain in global development spheres.

Energise Africa, a 2018 P4G start-up partnership, is steadily working to decrease that number by offering innovative financing and investing models to supply renewable energy to diverse communities across Uganda, Mali, Kenya, DRC, Mozambique, Tanzania, Senegal, Rwanda, Cameroon and Burkina Faso.

A joint venture of Ethex and Lendahand, two of Europe’s leading online impact investing platforms, the partnership connects with every-day people to provide affordable finance for pioneering solar businesses to accelerate universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, whilst targeting returns of around 6%. With investments starting at £50, Energise Africa offers every-day investors an affordable, low-risk option that also appeals to the global, growing interest in connecting one’s money to one’s values.

Following the close of their contract with P4G, the partnership has grown its registered base of investors more than 50%, from just over 1,110 participants at the start of the contract period to more than 1,800 today. Actual investors also grew by more than 291 individuals to almost 1,100 over the courses of the funding period. This growth of involved ‘every-day people’ enable the partnership to raise USD 11.5 million in cumulative investments via the platform, the effects of which are threefold: helping 358,000 people access solar energy, mitigating CO2 emissions by 78,000 tons a year and successfully repaying USD 3.5 million to investors. P4G start-up funding also contributed to digital marketing for the Energise Africa initiative, ultimately translating into increased action taken by users and viewers of Energise Africa platforms and materials.

Looking forward, Energise Africa will continue working to provide its community of investors with more protection around their investments. In approaching this task, they have pioneered their first investor guarantee in the United Kingdom, “protecting the capital invested by first time investors up to  £100” to encourage people to get started on impact investing with subsidized risk.

About

The vision of electric buses transporting the residents of Latin America’s largest cities is gaining measurable momentum. Already, there are more than 100 electric buses on the road in Santiago, Chile’s largest city, as part of a private initiative between electric utility Enel and bus operator Metbus. An additional 100 electric buses will hit the streets in early March as part of an arrangement between electric utility Engie and two bus operators, STP Santiago and Buses Vule. TranSantiago, the public provider of bus services in this capital city of more than 6 million residents, aims to replace approximately 500 diesel buses with electric buses when it releases its next new bus tender.

The Zero Emission Bus Rapid-Deployment Accelerator (ZEBRA), a 2018 P4G Partnership led by the International Council on Clean Transportation and C40 Cities, is working to support municipalities in the region to increase their deployment of electric buses, which can lead to cleaner air in heavily congested cities and a reduction carbon emissions that contribute to global warming.

While Santiago has the region’s largest electric bus fleet, other cities are making plans for future deployments, according to Ray Minjares, who leads the program for clean air at ICCT. ZEBRA partners have seen success in Medellín, Colombia, where the city issued in December 2018 a successful tender for 64 battery electric buses to be deployed by mid-2019. The City of Medellín has committed itself to shift to zero emission bus purchases by 2030. A prototype of the new electric buses will be ready by early April. In addition, the City of Sao Paulo has opened bids on the renovation if its fleet, the largest in Latin America. Sao Paulo has a climate law adopted in early 2018 that requires a 100 percent shift away from fossil diesel buses. ZEBRA partners are supporting city officials with strategies to bring zero emission buses into the fleet and ensure compliance with the climate law.

At the P4G Copenhagen Summit in October 2018, attended by a global audience of heads of state, CEOs, investors and civil society leaders, a panel of judges selected the Courtauld Commitment, a partnership that has achieved much success in reducing food waste in the U.K., as the 2018 P4G State-of-the-Art Partnership of the Year. Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark presented the winner with a Danish-designed award during the televised ceremony. All the 2018 finalists and winners are featured on the P4G website and YouTube channel.

“Winning the 2018 P4G State-of-the-Art Partnership of the Year Award was a powerful recognition of the proven impact of the Courtauld Commitment over the last 13 years,” remarked Marcus Gover, Chief Executive of WRAP, the leading partner for the 2018 P4G State-of-the-Art Partnership recipient. “It has helped us build credibility for the value and importance of public-private partnerships and has assisted us hugely in our work replicating this with partners around the world.”

The 2019 winning partnership will be prominently featured in P4G outreach and social media and will also gain access to P4G’s growing network of CEOs and government leaders around the world. Promotional partners include C40, Global Green Growth Institute, IFC, SAP Next-Gen, UN Global Compact, World Economic Forum and World Resources Institute.

“We aim to showcase state-of-the-art partnerships that can be models for other partnerships looking to achieve impact on the SDGs including P4G partnerships,” said P4G Global Director Ian de Cruz. “These partnerships provide demonstration value to inspire and scale new business and finance models to drive sustainable development and to power the green economy.”
