About

Comprometido con la Comida aims to reduce food loss and waste (FLW) across the supply chain by measuring and preventing waste and recovering the surplus product to donate or sell for profit.

Investing in Impact

P4G provided this partnership with US $99,870 in catalytic grant funding.

The partnership worked with key businesses and local partners to determine priority focus areas, such as identifying food waste hotspots across the value chain. In March 2021, Comprometido con la Comida launched Pacto por la Comida, a voluntary agreement (VA) between key stakeholders in the food supply industry who are actively collaborating to reduce FLW in Mexico.

Using the well-established delivery model of a voluntary agreement that was modified for Mexican context, the partnership recruited partners committed to working together to measure and minimize food loss and waste. Comprometido con la Comida secured the largest grocery retailer (Walmart Mexico) and the world’s largest food manufacturer (Nestle Mexico) to join the voluntary agreement as founding signatories.

The World Bank and WRAP National Strategy for FLW for Mexico and the successful launch of the VA with the support of major retailers and manufacturers play a key role in helping to meet the country’s 2030 Agenda and establishing Mexico as a pioneer in FLW in Latin America. The partnership continues to explore ways to become a financially sustainable and commercially viable model for reducing food loss and waste under the P4G scale-up partnership, FLAWLESS

This funding from P4G has been critical in contributing to Mexico’s national strategy to reduce food loss and waste. The partnership has complemented existing efforts in Mexico, and will help to reap the economic, social and environmental benefits of tackling food waste whilst ensuring that food also gets to those most in need.
