South Africa currently recycles 21% of plastics with the rest going to landfills. There is an untapped economic potential to improve waste management while also elevating and empowering the country’s approximately 90,0000 waste pickers, who are largely organized in cooperatives.
Implement and test a new IT system that will support local waste cooperatives to plan and execute their waste collection. This system will give citizens the ability to request targeted and punctual waste collection services. It will also support waste collectors by ensuring demand, thus allowing them to reliably supply industrial waste recyclers.
Create and test the system involving about 40 cooperatives and 800 waste pickers. A successful model has the potential to be replicated across countries and improve waste collection for 10,000 households. It can also divert 12,000 tons of PET plastics from landfills to the recycling value chain.
