The enfarm – CARE partnership provides precision agriculture through AI-powered soil sensing technology allowing farmers to improve their soil health, increase crop yields and increase their incomes.
P4G has awarded this partnership with about US $340,000 in grant funding.
In Vietnam, the average fertilizer application by farmers is 2.5 times the global average, leading them to lose up to two months of income annually.
While fertilizers are essential, their overuse—by up to 60%—is wasteful and harmful. Annually, US $120 billion worth of fertilizer is wasted, depleting soil and contributing to 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. With food demand set to rise 70% by 2050, optimizing fertilizer use and crop yields is critical.
enfarm is a Vietnamese agritech startup offering IoT-powered soil sensors and AI-driven recommendations via a mobile app. The app provides tailored advice, disease detection, market price forecasts and farm management tools.
Farmers have a choice of a single plug-and-play sensor permanently installed at root level that sends data via a handheld transponder to enfarm apps installed on their phones or an automated solution that is connected to a wireless network of sensors across the farm.
enfarm’s initial targets are Vietnam’s key crops—durian, coffee, and pepper—and the startup has already expanded to the Philippines with a 30,000-hectare coffee project. Plans include scaling to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, with a vision to provide full agricultural services, from inputs to market connections.
enfarm has deployed more than 500 sensors in just 8 months and helped increase crop yields up to 30% as recorded in some farms.
During the partnership period, enfarm plans to use demonstration plots, provide training, and enhance the user-friendliness of its products to make precision agriculture more accessible.
CARE is an international organization that works on improving the lives and capacities of people living in rural areas. The nonprofit has deep expertise in climate-smart agriculture and venture building and will support enfarm with investment readiness including developing an ESG strategy, engaging with policymakers to influence the enabling environment in favor of climate-smart agricultural practices, and developing knowledge products on enfarm’s learning and journey to investment readiness.
In 18 months, enfarm aims to raise almost US $1 million in investment, create more than 150 jobs, and positively affect more than 15,000 people.
The partnership comprises the following partners: enfarm (lead business partner); CARE (lead administrative partner); Western Highlands Agriculture & Forestry Science Institute; Dien Quang.
