About

Food Delivery Companies for Reducing Single-Use Plastics developed a shared protocol for food delivery companies and their partners to reduce the use of single-use plastics.

Investing in Impact

P4G provided this partnership with US $100,000 in catalytic grant funding.

The partnership leveraged the unique position of food delivery companies to engage both consumers and restaurants to reduce single use plastics. Their pilot exercise showed that engaging the sector to find market-based solutions can be challenging due to the current incentive structures within the tech logistics sector. This aligned with Indonesia's priorities on reducing plastic waste and ocean pollution by 2025.

Food Delivery Companies for Reducing Single-Use Plastics found that investor mindsets and financing are a barrier to tackling plastic waste – including reluctancy to spend on match funding, projects that do not quickly have a high return on investment and investor targets that often lack sustainability. Furthermore, incentive structures create a major barrier to collaboration as businesses attempt to capture as much of the growing market as possible. They found more initiatives and investments are needed to include Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia to develop solutions that address plastic waste pollution from food delivery.
