The FINISH Mondial partnership provides innovative blended finance to scale access to safely managed sanitation, contributing to heathier, economically empowered communities in Ethiopia.
P4G provided the partnership with US $149,970 in grant funding.
FINISH Mondial strengthens the supply chain and creates an enabling environment to solve rural and urban sanitation challenges for households and institutions. It uses a proven Diamond model approach to improve access to safe sanitation to communities in Ethiopia. The model brings together key local stakeholders to work in partnership to overcome the barriers associated with scaling safe sanitation services. This approach includes
• Onboarding communities willing to pay for improved sanitation;
• Mobilizing financial institutions to create a sustainable sanitation and hygiene loan products;
• Supporting entrepreneurs develop affordable and innovative sanitation options; and
• Collaborating with the government to influence an enabling policy and regulatory environment.
During P4G’s funding period from February to September 2022, the partnership made impressive progress in delivering access to safe sanitation to communities in Ethiopia. It constructed over 3,700 improved sanitation systems that benefit over 187,000 community members. Seeing the value in this approach, households invested more than USD 1.3 million (€1,220,000) to build sanitation systems.
FINISH Mondial formalized its partnership with SilAfrica and distributed 2,200 plastic latrine slabs in the Amhara and Oromia regions. These are easily transportable and durable slabs fitted with a lid that are installed over latrines. This helps make latrines easier to clean, stay fresh and prevent spreading disease. It also worked on the development of a pit emptying service business plan for small and micro enterprises and a feasibility assessment on the pupu pump.
FINISH Mondial conducted high-level dialogues with financial institutions and the Ministry of Finance on financial innovation. The partnership helped conduct a discussion with the Associations of Ethiopian Microfinance Institutions (AEMFI), which is the association of 41 MFIs in the country, to influence the incorporation of WASH loans as MFIs loan portfolio. In collaboration with community banks and microfinance institutions, the partnership is designing affordable loan products for sanitation solutions. It initiated transaction ledger software as a digital solution for sanitation financing that would enable microfinance organizations to increase access to their services.
The partnership's future focus will be on introducing Silafrica plastic slabs to more districts in Ethiopia and scaling impact financing for sanitation. The partnership also plans to establish a plastic slabs distribution system, which will use a mix of cooperatives, small and medium enterprises, and individual retailers as liaison agents to distribute FINISH Mondial’s plastic slabs from SilAfrica to households in Ethiopia. An additional area of focus will be to support fecal sludge management at scale.
